Plan a visit (Practical Information)

Going to a new university in a new country is an exciting and possibly a slightly daunting prospect, particularly if it is your first time living abroad. The following informations give an overview of the practicalities of visiting Brazil. Photo: publicity

BEFORE YOUR ARRIVAL

 VISA:
Exchange students need a visa to enter Brazil. The visa application must be requested at the Embassy / Consulate of Brazil in your home country. The student visa (Temporário IV) is good through one year. It is not possible to change from a tourist visa to a student visa in Brazil. The correct visa is mandatory to all students entering Brazil and registering at Unesp.

HEALTH INSURANCE:
Even though Unesp provides Health Assistance at each one of its Faculties, you must acquire a health insurance for the period you are in Brazil. This insurance must cover repatriation as well. Also, this document will be requested upon your registration at the campus. Do not forget to bring along with you, your vaccination card (if you have one), as well as further information about previous health issues, such as allergies and special medications. It is very important to have a contact person in case of emergencies.

DOCUMENTS:
In addition to your passport and the documents provided on your application to the International Courses in English, please bring a national document that includes your mother and father’s names. This information is usually not included in your passport and it is required for some documents in Brazil, such as school bus passes or students IDs, among others.

ACCOMMODATION
Unesp, for its particular structure, counts with International Relations Offices (ERI) in each one of its Faculties, spread over 24 different cities throughout the State of São Paulo. In that sense, these Offices provide major assistance for foreign students previously and during their stay at Unesp. It includes support in the arrangements for places in the so called “Repúblicas” (students shared houses); guidance for visa procedures once students have arrived; and also academic support for students during registration, settlement in Brazil and research and studies related questions. The University has student residences that follow the Brazilian regulations for socially vulnerable population access to Higher Education Institutions. Hence, those available places at residences are prioritized to attend the needs of our regular students.
For these reasons, the University generally assists incoming students on how to search and integrate with the very popular “Repúblicas”, houses in which the costs and facilities are shared by a group of students with very reasonable prices.

ACADEMIC CALENDAR
First Semester (Fall): February – June Second Semester (Spring): August – December
* Please notice that each one of Programs at the International Courses at Unesp has developed a particular Calendar, according to their Courses and Faculties.

GETTING AROUND IN SÃO PAULO:
Find your way to Unesp campuses from São Paulo’s international airports: Cumbica (Guarulhos) – Congonhas – Viracopos (Campinas) Transportation to the various campuses of Unesp is done by buses departing from bus terminals Barra Funda, Jabaquara and Tietê. The most economic and secure way to connect between the airports of Congonhas and Cumbica and bus service is via AIRPORT BUS SERVICE.* You may also prefer to take a taxi. We recommend buying the ticket and paying in advance. Credit card payment option is available at the arrivals lobby of the international airports. If your flight is arriving at Viracopos International Airport, in Campinas, a city located 90km away from São Paulo’s city, we strongly recommend you to contact your Faculty. For further information on how to get to your final destination.* for more information on prices and schedule of the Airport Bus Service, please go to http://www.airportbusservice.com.br/

AFTER YOUR ARRIVAL

As soon as you arrive to one of our Faculties, it is very important to present yourself to the International Relations Office (ERI – Escritório de Relações Internacionais) to proceed with your registration and to get good local information for your stay.

Also, you will need to present yourself to the Brazilian Federal Police within 30 days to legally register your stay in Brazil. The local personnel at the International Relations Office will assist you with this, but please bear in mind that there will be a fine for each day of delay for these procedures.
