English Language Teacher Training at Unesp

I - ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHER TRAINING AT UNESP

The São Paulo State University (UNESP) in Brazil welcomes applications from students and graduates in English language teaching programmes (ESL, TESOL, TEFL) in any level (Bachelors, Masters, PhD, Teaching Certificate) enrolled in British universities, who are interested in combining teaching practice and research experience for up to 10 months in Brazil.

Selected candidates will be enrolled as exchange students in the English language programme at UNESP and will be co-supervised by researchers from the language departments. They will be developing research and teacher training activities on a full time basis in one of UNESP’s campuses in the state of São Paulo.

Students will receive a monthly scholarship to cover subsistence costs, plus a travel grant for the purchase of the return airfare to Brazil.

This programme is a partnership between UNESP and British Council. 

II - ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

The program wishes to offer an international opportunity for students in UK institutions to develop research skills abroad, and have international teaching practice.

Once selected for the programme, participants will be enrolled as exchange students in the English Language programme at Unesp, and will be supervised by one of the leading academics from the University. Students will developa study plan and will receive credits for their research work.  

As part of their training as teachers of English for international students, participants  will be expected to have 20 hours per week of teaching practice, including class planning hours. Teaching hours can be flexible according to the classes’ times and the research schedule. When not in teaching practice, students are expected to conduct research activities according to their study, including during summer or winter breaks, according to Unesp’s academic calendar. The academic calendar has two semesters: from March to July, and from August to December.  

All selected candidates will be offered an IELTS Training the Trainers course in São Paulo upon their arrival.

o cover substance costs, participants will receive a monthly grant of BRL 2000 (two thousand Brazilian Reais), plus a travel grant of GBP 800 (eight hundred British pounds) to support the purchase of the airfare. Any other costs (health and travel insurance, visa costs for Brazil, accommodation, internal travel in Brazil and the UK) must be covered by the participant. Students will receive support to find accommodation and settle in the city they will be placed.    

III - ELIGIBILITY

Students and graduates in English language teaching programmes (ESL, TESOL, TEFL) in any level (Bachelors, Masters, PhD, Teaching Certificate) enrolled in British universities.

Candidates should be native English speakers or show fluent level ability in English Language. Previous experience in teaching English to an international audience is a bonus.

V – SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION

When completing their online application form, candidates must also submit the following required documents:

- Proof of enrolment in an English language and/ or teaching program in a British University, indicating home university (scan)
- Transcripts confirming good academic results (C or above) (scan)
- Reference letter from a professor at home University (preferably masters/PhD supervisor) (Scan)
- Letter of motivation to apply for the programme
