BIOSCIENCES INSTITUTE/SÃO PAULO STATE’S COAST CAMPUS – IB/CLP

PIONEERING

The bachelor’s degree course in Biological Sciences (majors in Marine Biology and Coastal Management) in the São Paulo state’s coast campus (CLP), implemented in 2001, was the fi rst higher education public course in the Baixada Santista region. In 2012, by means of the vacancy extension program at the state public universities, the licentiate degree course in Biological Sciences was created, which started its activities in February 2013. The consolidation of the faculty, the progress of research, and the improvement of the structural conditions of the CLP allow for the creation of a stricto sensu Graduate Program in Aquatic Biodiversity Management (master’s degree and doctorate), implemented in 2014. CLP also offers the lato sensu Graduate course (major) in Environmental Management. In 2015, already consolidated, the São Paulo State’s Coast campus was not any longer an experimental unit and became the Biosciences Institute (IB). With this change, the campus now presents a high growth potential, by means of new partnerships established with State departments, governmental and non-governmental institutions, and also with other units of Unesp.

TEACHING

The CLP/Biosciences Institute offers the bachelor’s degree course in Biological Sciences, with two majors – Marine Biology and Coastal Management. After the conclusion of the major desired, the student permitted to rejoin for the completion of the second major. The CLP/IB also provides the licentiate degree course in Biological Sciences, targeted at the training of Biology teachers.

RESEARCH

São Paulo State’s Coast campus – Biosciences Institute has four major research areas: Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biologically Active Molecules; Aquatic, Riparian, and Coastal Organisms Biology; Population Biology, Fisheries Biology, and Sustainable Aquaculture; and Ecosystem Processes and Aquatic Ecosystem Management.

EXTENSION

The university extension activities have been carried out in partnership with governmental and non-governmental bodies and with the private sector. The projects related to education are highlighted, among which, those that discuss mangrove forests, protected and recycling areas, namely: Environmental Education on Mangrove Forests at the Elementary Schools of the Municipality of Santos (SP); Saving and Learning with Megalobulimus; Itinerant Museum of Marine Biology; and Community Environmental Monitoring of Coastal Protected Areas.
