Chemical Engineering is the field of engineering focused on the design, development and optimization of industrial processes that employ chemical, physical, biological, physical, chemical and biochemical transformations.

The chemical engineer designs, manages and optimizes processes, the assembly of projects in the chemical area, based on their knowledge of chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, biochemistry, other areas of engineering (mechanical, civil, electrical, electronic, production); and good knowledge in the area of chemical engineering (unit operations, transport phenomena, applied thermodynamics, biochemical engineering and reactors). They work in the field of chemical, petrochemical, pulp and paper, textile, agrochemical, equipment, and many other industries.

The campus located in Araraquara focuses on projects and sustainable processes in accordance with international standards of good practice, quality, environmentally friendliness and clean production. Thus, this major aims to contribute to the training of competent professionals for the competitive global market, whilst giving a strong academic background for research, development, and innovation.

The Institute of Chemistry has great prominence on the national scene as a training institution for professionals in the chemistry sector, mainly focused on science at the undergraduate level (Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry) and graduate level (Graduate Program in Chemistry and Graduate Program in Biotechnology), and in the Technology area (Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Technology).

Thus, for the consolidation of a campus focused on science and technology, it is necessary to train professionals for strategic action, uniting these two areas of knowledge, which can be facilitated and achieved with the creation of a major in engineering.

The career can be understood as a technological activity that uses the methodology of scientific research focused on the development and proposal of solutions to problems related to projects of industrial plants, product design, manufacturing processes and raw service technical assistance, and preparation of reports.

By analyzing the production of ethanol in the Brazilian territory in recent seasons, it is possible to see that the state of São Paulo is responsible for the production of over 50% of all Brazilian ethanol. The production values ​of the year 2008-2009 show the productive capacity of the state of São Paulo and its strategic importance to Brazil. Araraquara lies in the central position of the region with the largest area of ethanol production in the state.

By applying the same exercise to other agribusinesses, like orange and, more recently, the industrial production of fresh milk, it is proved again that Araraquara is also central to these activities and likely to become a major distribution center due to the city logistics.

Besides being a new major at UNESP, the Chemical Engineering major has great socioeconomic-political importance due to the privileged geographical position in Araraquara.
