Located 270 kilometers from the capital, in central São Paulo state, Araraquara is one of the most well developed cities of the state. Home to an estimated population of 200,000 inhabitants, it has a diversified manufacturing center – textile, metallurgy, mechanics – and stands out for its role in the production of Brazilian sugar cane and citrus fruit. Founded in the beginning of the nineteenth century, Araraquara rapidly grew from 1885 on with the arrival of the railroad.
